At the tender age of fourteen Poonam came to Delhi. She found a job and taught herself English. At such a young age she showed tremendous fortitude and courage. Her older sister was invited to church a few months ago and Poonam came along. Her sister did not have the faith to stand up to her husband and embrace a new faith but Poonam did.
Because she had suffered a lot in her life she identified with the pain of Jesus on the Cross very easily, even though it was all new to her. It is amazing and refreshing to see how people who have never heard of Jesus can identify so readily with the sacrifice of the cross. The more pain in life the more open heart become to the agony of our savior.
Priyanka was a very active part of the church till her teen years. Then the world seemed more attractive to her and she refused to commit herself to Christ until this year. She would occasionally come to church with her family but her heart was not in it. Sometimes being raised in the chuch is not enough and many of our teens follow a different path. This year Priyanka decided she had had enough of the world and the sin she had been involved in. She made a radical change. Sitting on studies with her is quite an experience. She is so full of conviction. She knows the scriptures well. All those years in the children’s classes did not go in vain. All those family devotionals when she was a child are still in her heart.
She speaks with passion because she knows what it is like to be lost. When asked if she felt tempted to go back to her old life she replied with an emphatic “No!”. She is very eager to help other teens like Poonam but also her friends who like her grew up in the church and are not following Christ yet. She wants to become a leader so she can make a difference. |

Poonam is seventeen years old. She comes from a very poor part of Nepal. Her family went through a lot of trauma. Poonam watched her parents break up and her mum’s new husband’s abusive behavior. Women have very few rights in that part of the world. Generally they are not respected very much.
Poonam faithfully studied the Bible regularly and she was baptized on December 20. She has changed a lot. From a quiet shy young woman she has become a joyful teenager who is finally able to enjoy life. She had to forgive a lot of people including her step-dad but she is now free.
